In 2024, IWC unveiled the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 Ceralume®—a luminous ceramic concept watch—though, regrettably, it did not enter mass production. This year, however, the Big Pilot’s Watch Ceralume®—long-awaited by watch enthusiasts—has finally entered mass production. Retaining the essence of the concept watch’s all-white aesthetic and powered by the Calibre 52616 perpetual calendar movement, this timepiece marks a historic fusion of two of the brand’s core technologies: advanced ceramic craftsmanship and the perpetual calendar complication.


Two years ago, IWC introduced its patented Ceralume® luminous ceramic technology—the result of years of dedicated research and development by the IWC XPL experimental engineering department—which has now secured patent protection. Its core principle involves uniformly blending zirconium oxide ceramic powder with high-quality Swiss Super-LumiNova® luminous coating material, thereby endowing the ceramic itself with the ability to absorb and emit light. As a premier luminous material in the industry, Super-LumiNova® acts like a "light-energy battery," absorbing energy from both natural sunlight and artificial light sources, storing it, and subsequently releasing it steadily in the dark; moreover, it does not degrade or lose efficacy through repeated use.


While standard white ceramic is produced by sintering zirconium oxide with metal oxides, luminous ceramic requires the thorough integration of ceramic powder with luminous pigments. However, the vast disparity in particle sizes between these two components makes achieving a uniform blend an extremely difficult challenge. After years of intensive effort to overcome this hurdle, IWC engineers pioneered an exclusive ball-milling process: by filling a rotating cylinder with grinding media, they utilized continuous rotation, collision, and fine grinding to transform raw materials of varying particle sizes into a fine, uniform powder. This breakthrough established the critical technical foundation required to enable the mass production of Ceralume® luminous ceramic.


Most luminous watch cases currently available on the market achieve their glow through composite materials or applied surface coatings; consequently, their luminescence is often faint and prone to wear and abrasion. In contrast, IWC’s Ceralume® luminous ceramic features a material that glows throughout its entire structure, radiating a uniform, deep blue luminescence in the dark—a brightness sufficient to illuminate the back of one's hand. The entire timepiece—from the case and dial to the strap—glows as a unified entity.
